Medicinal Uses?:
The fruit is said to act as a sedative and is eaten to halt vomiting and thirst.
On the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean.
They mentioned how herbalists there were prescribing
loquat leaf tea
with some success to patients with various types of cancer.
People knew that loquat had the hydrocyanic glycosides in common with apricot and
peach seeds as well as wild cherry tree bark.
These hydrocyanic glycosides are also known as amygdalin better known from the work of
Dr. Krebs as laetrile and that laetrile is still respected by many people as both a cancer preventive and cure for some cancers.
The leaves and kernel contain amygdalin
(amygdalin is otherwise known as the anti-cancer vitamin, B17 or laetrile)
The fruit of the loquat, besides being good to eat fresh, is often used in jams, jellies, and pies.
A tea is made from the leaves, and this is commercially available. It is said to cure a variety of ills, including
stomach upset, pain, and even cancer.
The seeds are also eaten as a cure for cancer, but we can't find any reliable documentation that this
actually works.
The flowers are regarded as having expectorant properties. An infusion of the leaves, or the dried, powdered leaves, may
be taken to relieve diarrhea and depression and to counteract intoxication from consumption of alcoholic beverages. Leaf poultices
are applied on swellings.
Loquats can go in a lot of taste directions. They can taste like citrus, and pack a puckering punch, with
strong acidity and sweetness exploding like fireworks in your mouth. They can taste like mellow apricots.
They can taste like peaches. They can taste like pears. They can taste like brown sugar. They can taste
like champagne or strawberries. They can taste like delicate powdered sugar. And they can taste "rocket to the moon" sweet,
sweeter than you could ever imagine.
Loquat trees are perhaps THE strongest subtropical fruit tree (with some competition for the top spot from
the fejoia.) They are evergreen and once established, need little or no care, and little or no water.
They essentially define the term "drought tolerant fruit tree." They will grow in just about any soil, including
rock hard clay, as long as the soil is not waterlogged in winter.
They ask for little and give much. A tip of the hat to loquats.
